Some Recent Results in Finite Time Thermodynamics

The talk will begin with a summary of maximum power and minimum dissipation analyses but will focus primarily on recent results. One such result concerns the Pareto optimality of the tradeoff between rate and dissipation in any sensible control. Another result concerns the Ladder property of dissipative processes. The talk will conclude with an example from biology: energy disposal on coral reefs. Biological systems at all scales represent controlled thermodynamic processes. How such control has evolved to cope with (and to shift) this Pareto optimum in energy scarce versus energy abundant environments leads to new predictions for coral reef ecology. These predictions have been confirmed in the field.
